Overview
On April 23, 2020, Riot Games officially cancelled MSI 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. It remains the "missing chapter" of League of Legends esports history.
MSI 2020 was intended to be the sixth annual Mid-Season Invitational. It would have featured 12 regional champions competing in a format likely similar to 2019 (Play-In, Group Stage, Knockout Stage). However, international travel restrictions and health concerns made the event impossible to host.
The "What If" Scenario
The cancellation robbed fans of seeing a prime JD Gaming (LPL), the dominant G2 Esports (LEC), and a resurgent T1 (LCK) clash on the international stage. Teams like Cloud9 and Talon Esports were also in peak form during this window.
The Theoretical Participants
The following teams won their respective Spring Splits and qualified for the event before its cancellation. They are recognized as the 2020 MSI Honorees.

| CN | JD Gaming | May 2 | LPL Spring Champ (3-2 vs TES) |

| TR | Fenerbahçe | May 11 | TCL Winter Champ (3-0 vs IW) |
Alternative Event: Mid-Season Cup
To fill the void left by MSI, Riot Games and Tencent organized the 2020 Mid-Season Cup (MSC). Held online with an artificially standardized ping (approx 30ms), it featured the Top 4 teams from the LCK (Korea) and the LPL (China).
Note: This was not an official MSI, but it served as the high-level replacement tournament for the season.
